Treating Spring Allergies Naturally

Natural Allergy Treatment

I love spring. I can finally start getting outside more without being completely frozen. I can go outside without wearing shoes, because really isn’t being barefoot walking in the grass more fun?? I can start soaking up some vitamin D from the sunshine. It’s time to start thinking about spring planting. And, of course, one of my favorite things about spring is that everything is starting to bloom!

If you’re anything like me with the beauty of spring and blooming trees and plants comes some unpleasant symptoms- itchy and watery eyes, sneezing, congestion, puffy face, cough, skin rashes, maybe even in some severe cases some wheezing and difficulty breathing. How are you supposed to enjoy the beauty of spring when it can also cause so much distress?

Some people will take allergy medication, but that might not always be a good option for everyone. In my case, I don’t always like some of the medication side effects and would prefer to treat my allergies naturally when possible. Before doing any treatment, including natural treatments, you should have a discussion with your healthcare provider to see what a safe option for you would be.

Here is a list of just some of my favorite natural allergy remedies:

· Apple Cider Vinegar
oApple cider vinegar contains numerous beneficial compounds including acetic and malic acid, vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and several others. The body uses these compounds to balance it’s natural pH to prevent ill-health and to remedy such issues as allergies. The nutrients it contains also boost the immune system and functioning.
o A 2017 study done in carp shows some promising evidence that apple cider vinegar help enhance your immune system & can also help fight inflammation in the body if this can be replicated in humans. (1)

· Probiotics
o Researchers believe that probiotics can encourage the production of antibodies in babies and children that can protect them from allergies later in life (2).
o Probiotics have been specifically proven effective in the remedy of these allergies: birch pollen allergy in children, cedar pollen allergy in adults, and eczema in infants and children.
o For nearly all types of allergies, probiotics have food to have positive effects on the body. They improve function of mucosal lining of the intestines, hinder growth of pathogenic (bad) bacteria, stimulate production of immune enhancing substances, and have a direct influence on immune response.

· Raw Honey
o local pollens that are transferred into the raw honey can be taken to build immunity
o Raw honey has also been found to have anti-inflammatory properties and can help improve a mild cough (3)

· Bee Pollen
o Reduces histamine and has an anti-inflammatory effect (4)

· Following an anti-inflammatory diet (5)

· EAT: Flax seeds, fish (especially salmon, maceral, tuna and sardines), walnuts (omega 3 fatty acids), fresh produce, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, fruits (especially strawberries, blueberries, oranges, cherries, apples), whole grains, olive oil, ginger

· AVOID: sugar, white bread, processed food, processed meats, fried food, lard, refined carbohydrates, sweetened beverages such as soda

· Additional dietary changes

· Bone broth
o Rich in glycine an amino acid that has anti-inflammatory powers
o The gelatin in bone broth heals the gut and has anti-inflammatory, immune regulatory, and cell protective actives.
o LOCALS: We are completely obsessed with bone broth from a local farm & co-op in the area. Savage Mountain farm has delicious chicken and beef bone broth- check them out!

· Vitamin C

· Increased Fiber

· Quercetin
o Quercetin acts as a natural antihistamine, reducing the symptoms of seasonal allergies. (6)
o Found in onions, Capers, Elderberries, Kale, Okra, Apple Peels, Aronia Berries, Cranberries, Asparagus, Goji Berries.

· Fermented Foods
o People who eat fermented foods have more immune-regulating lactic acid bacteria, as well as greater overall gut diversity. Greater gut diversity can reduce your allergy symptoms (7).
o Fermented foods include: Sauerkraut, Kimchi, Kefir, Yogurt, Kombucha, Natto

· Broemlion
o This is found in pineapple and reduces inflammation.
 
· Nasal Irrigation (Neti Pot)

· Acupuncture (8)

· Essential Oils
§ One of the best found combinations for allergy relief is lavender, lemon, and peppermint.
§ Lavender helps reduce histamine reactions and helps respiratory issues like bronchitis and asthma.
§ Lemon, like lavender, eases respiratory issues with the added benefit of thinning mucus.
§ Peppermint improves congestion and excess mucus. It calms spasms to help coughing caused by a drippy nose and provides the feel of clear breathing. Mint also helps relieve headaches which can go along with allergies.

·Herbs: Many herbs can be useful in treating allergies by reducing inflammation and histamine, while also supporting your immune system.
· Rosemary

I’ve spent years trying to find that one lotion or moisturizer that I could fall in love with. As a woman in my thirties, I’m always looking for something that I can use on my face and body that is moisturizing for my dry skin patches, isn’t too oily for my T-zone, will give my skin a nice glow, helps treat the occasional blemish or acne, has some anti-aging properties since wrinkles are becoming a concern, and is sustainable and affordable option. After years of searching, I really hadn’t fallen in love with any lotions or beauty products. With a list of must haves like that I knew it would be hard. And then it happened. I found my miracle product; I discovered lard , and I finally feel like I’m excited about my skincare regimen. I’m finally feeling like my skin is HEALTHY and I’m happy about what I’m using to moisturize both my face, lips, and body. You might be thinking, did she really just say she uses lard?? Yes, lard . I rub lard on my body. I rub lard on my lips. I rub lard on my face. When you’re looking for that perfect skincare product, I’m sure lard never crossed your mind. I know it didn’t for me until recently. I mean honestly, the thought of rubbing pig fat on my body and face didn’t sound that appealing until I did a little research. Now I can’t imagine using anything else. This summer my husband and I met our friends at Wildom Farm. Their farm is located in McHenry, Maryland, which is about 15 minutes from our farm. Wildom opened my eyes to the possibility of using lard in skin care products, in my search to find a better balance of wellness and sustainability. Wildom raises pigs, chickens and turkeys in forest and pasture while using regenerative farming techniques. This is the way farming should be, focusing on producing healthy and happy animals that are living in the sunshine and eating the forage to create healthy forests and land. Wildom reached out to me about the possibility of using lard for skincare products, and after some research, I learned just how special lard really is. In my opinion, it might just be a perfect skincare option for me and after reading about the benefits it might be a great option for you as well. So what makes lard such a great option? There are truly countless benefits . First let’s talk about cost . The great thing about lard is that you get all of the benefits of expensive creams and beauty care products without the crazy price tag. Expensive creams have always been a turn off for me. I want something that works, but I don’t want to pay an outrageous price. As a mother I’m usually spending more on my children than myself. I’m sure all of you parents can relate. Lard is a great solution. Compared to the cost of many other products it’s inexpensive. And with lard, a little goes a long way, so I’m using less and getting more out of it. I’m actually saving money on my skincare regimen since switching to lard. Another huge benefit for me is sustainability . Using lard in my daily skincare regimen has really brought me back to appreciating what resources I have locally. Instead of creating more waste, we are choosing to use the lard from a local pig farm and repurposing it for wellness and beauty products. As long as pigs are continuing to be harvested, we will continue to have this product readily available in a local setting. Using what we already have readily available and repurposing is truly empowering. I’m feeling like I’m not only doing my skin a favor, but I’m doing my part to help the Earth. Avoiding chemicals is also a huge must for me. I’ve really tried cutting back on the use of chemicals in my daily life, especially since having children. Have you ever bought a beauty product and looked at the ingredient list? I usually feel pretty overwhelmed when I do. I’ve started using only safe and chemicals free options for health and beauty, and lard is an amazing solution for that. I can create my own skin care product with only a handful of ingredients. And I can easily pronounce everything I’m putting on my skin. No questioning or looking up what an ingredient is. I have extremely sensitive skin with sensitivity to numerous chemicals or common beauty ingredients, so I’m always cautiously reading labels. It’s really bringing me peace of mind having to avoid the question of what I’m putting on my skin. Now for the really fun stuff... what lard is really doing for my skin. This is where my mind was blown. There are so many benefits. Lard can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, tone and firm skin, even out complexion and skin color, reduce redness, fight inflammation, help treat rosacea, reduce dryness (which makes it great for use in winter!), helps treat eczema, helps reduce appearance of scars, smooths skin texture, softens skin, improves acne, and reduces the size of pores. (2,3,4, 5) All of that from lard?! Yep. I hope you can understand now why I was so intrigued. But how and why does lard work so well for skincare? When it comes to cellular makeup, pig lard is incredibly close to human skin. Lard has a similar pH to that of human skin, and it is made up of both saturated and monounsaturated fats. When it comes to skincare, the experts know that oil dissolves oil. Since lard is so similar to our own skin oils, it’s really perfect to be used as a skincare product for humans in many forms- lotions, creams, lip balms, cleansers. (1) Pigs are also extremely efficient at processing sunlight and storing it as Vitamin D in their fat (2). When we rub lard on our skin, we’re soaking up all of that Vitamin D, which helps to minimize dark spots and lines, reduce acne, promote collagen production and reduce inflammation which is a common factor in conditions such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (3). Lard is also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin E and Vitamin A (1,5). It’s packed full of vitamins to give us that healthy glowing skin that we all crave. But there is one important thing to remember before you go rubbing pig fat all over your body and face. Not all lard is created equally. Vitamin D-rich lard comes from pastured hogs that have been exposed to sunlight (2). That’s why we use lard from Wildom. These pigs are kept in the forest and on pasture enjoying that beautiful sunshine and soaking up all of that vitamin D to help give us beautiful, soft and most importantly HEALTHY skin. So now you might understand why lard checks all of my boxes for a perfect skincare product. I’m officially hooked. “I didn’t lose myself in motherhood. I found myself.” -unknown I keep finding this quote about motherhood, and it resonates in my soul. Today (May 6th) is World Maternal Mental Health Day. This Sunday also happens to be Mother's Day. With both of these on my mind, I’m reflecting on how motherhood has helped me find my way to becoming a healthier and happier me. Motherhood is my purpose . This is something that really sticks out to me when I think about motherhood. Am I saying that’s all I am- a mother? Absolutely not. But it’s really helped define me and my purpose in more ways than I ever thought possible. The trick was learning to love myself enough not to get lost in my motherhood journey. My sweet daughter Irelynn Aurora is now 2, and it still amazes me every day the little person she is becoming. She is sweet, caring, thoughtful, ridiculously smart, witty, and so funny. Looking back, I honestly don’t know what I did without her. She tells me I’m her best friend, and I don’t know how I survived without the love of this sweet little girl. In less than 6 weeks, we’re adding a little more crazy to our already crazy routine. Our son, Rooney Cian, will be here. We’re so excited, but definitely a little nervous about juggling life with two littles. Motherhood has been my greatest adventure, but it’s not been an easy one for me. It’s honestly been the happiest and most joyful time of my life. I love my little family more than anything. But through this happy time in my life, I’ve faced a lot of personal struggles. The complete joy and happiness of my motherhood journey was intertwined with anxiety, depression, self doubt, and guilt. If you have also experienced this, isn’t it crazy how the happiest time of your life can also be the biggest struggle you’ve ever faced? I won't go into all of the details of my struggles with postpartum anxiety and depression, but I know motherhood changed me as a person . It completely flipped my life, and even some of my beliefs about life, upside down. I truly feel through all of the struggle that I found myself- my purpose, my passion, my drive. I’ve learned more about myself by taking care of a little human than I ever knew possible. I hit some of my lowest lows, but also my highest highs. I’ve learned to ask for help, to say no, to stand up for myself in a new way, and to chase my passion. The road to get there was long and bumpy, but I’m heading in a direction with my life that I’m happy and excited about. I want to share a few things that motherhood has taught me so far. A few personal lessons and truths in my journey to heath, wellness and happiness. - Try not to judge other people, you don’t know what they’re battling with . Even if they seem happy on the outside, there may be something they’re battling with internally. Kindness and empathy go a long way. Not only for other people, but also for yourself. - Motherhood is my purpose . I’m trying to put more focus on this. Focusing on something that keeps you going and gives you purpose is a great way to cope with struggles. This was what kept me even a little sane. - Motherhood changed me as a person. For better or for worse, I’m a different person since my daughter entered my world. Im just trying to navigate my world as this new person. It’s challenging, but so worth it. I may have lost some people in my life, but the truly loyal people are still there and we’re closer than ever. - Mental health is serious . Seek help or find ways to cope with it as soon as you can. I just hope society finds a better way to provide people access to mental health services, because right now things are not as good as they need to be. After my struggles with trying to find help, I found my own way to cope. Nature and spending time with my daughter are the best ways to help me get outside of my mind for a while. I recently started counseling to help make sure I am in the right place mentally so that I can work through some of the lows if they come after baby boy is born. If you're unsure of where to start looking for resources to find help, reach out to your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Don't wait. - Admitting you have a problem is ok. It doesn’t make you weak. I hid things so well that in general most people were not aware of my postpartum struggles. It took me a long time to admit to myself that there was a problem, and even longer to admit this to other people. If I could change anything it would be admitting that there was a problem sooner. - What you’re eating and putting into your body is essential to physical and mental health. - Physical activity can also make a huge difference in both physical and mental health. - Sunshine . I need so much sunshine. Getting outside in the fresh air and sunshine is necessary. In my busy life, I still need to find more time for this. Luckily I live somewhere where this is so easy! - Do what makes you happy. Life is short. Don’t stay in situations that cause you more problems mentally or physically. It’s not worth it. For me I needed to give up some things in my life. Sometimes letting go is necessary . - Try not to overthink those things you can’t change . This is something I’m still really struggling with. Acceptance can be difficult. - Find something you’re passionate about and pursue it . Although I’m first and foremost a mother and wife, I needed to find something that was really mine. I needed to find something that I was passionate about again. Luckily I find passion in our farm and the farm business. It’s really helped me escape and find my passion again. - SELF. CARE . I’m terrible at this, but realizing how important it is to keep me going. Part of this is rest and sleep. I’m also terrible about this, but it’s so important. This should also include escaping for a while through meditation, reflection, prayer, music dance, or whatever helps you get out of your thoughts. - Your tribe is essential. It doesn’t have to be big, but if you have a few people in your life that are supportive it makes all the difference. Some very important people have gotten me through my darkest days. I love you all. So to all you mamas out there... you’re amazing. You really are. You’re stronger than you’ll ever know. Whether motherhood came a little easier to you, or if you struggle to find your own path as a mother- you’ve got this! Thank you for all you do for your families.
